Arrogance fuels Coke decline by J. A. Davis
"Good will is the one and only asset that competition cannot undersell or destroy." --Marshall Field, American retail merchandising legend
There was some hope with the changes in
leadership at Coca Cola there would be some attention focused on numerous areas of both internal dissent and
more particularly in consumer relations.
Unfortunately, there has been no evidence
that such is taking place. In fact, it appears as Coca Cola is continuing its policy of arrogance as usual.
If you think I'm being a little harsh, consider the recent revelation
that for this coming Christmas season, there will no longer be a Santa Claus
pictured anywhere on Coca Cola containers, something that had been a mainstay for
Coke for decades. Remember all the gorgeous Santa art Coke produced over the years?

Santa Claus by Haddon Sundblom for Coke ads
Coca-Cola executives have regularly ignored around two million
petitioners who have protested Coke's anti-Southern activities. How disengeneous can Coke be when their
inventor, Colonel John Pemberton, was a Confederate cavalry hero who was severely wounded in the War Between the States?
Coca-Cola will be opening a large exhibit
honoring Colonel Pemberton at the new aquarium in Atlanta. Do you suppose they will identify Colonel
Pemberton's love for his Georgia home and heritage, his advances in medical and agricultural chemistry, or his contributions to rebuild Atlanta and Georgia from the ashes of Sherman's war crimes?
Then we get the most recent apparent arrogance which could be
translated into the stupid category which seems to run
rampant within the Atlanta business community. Could it be the
recycled water they demand that the rest of Georgia and even Alabama surrender in order to satisfy Atlanta's greed?
This one goes back to the practices of previous Coca-Cola management,
much of which still reigns supreme. It is about how some small soft drink retailers had
the courage of their convictions to stand up to monopolistic practices.
The Jaycee Creed which Coca Cola used
to vigorously support says "Economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise." The former Vice
President for Public Relations for Coke was a past president of the U.S. Jaycees.
Their latest actions as reported by the Atlanta Journal Constitution
pretty much repudiate all the good work they did in their days of being the
corporation that paid its civic rent and truly believed in free enterprise.
The report on Coke is not so good these
days. The stock has depressed to half what it once was. There is
outright arrogance about listening to former loyal customers. They've disappointed every child in the world, including
this one, by denying Santa Claus, and now their retail base is winning important decisions over
their attempts to monopolize the market place.
I regret seeing all this happen. I'm a Southerner who always placed Coca-Cola as the giant of Southern
progress following a terrible episode in our history. I am proud of Colonel Pemberton, the Candlers and Woodruffs. They would have never kicked
Santa out. They always took the time to listen to the consumer and particularly to the small retailers who were the mainstay of their
growth and development to become the world's best known consumer product.
There is a moral to this story. Whether it concerns a small store in
Mexico or your own heritage and values------stand up and speak up. We're coming to a showdown to determine whether Marxist multi-culturalism and
political correctness will completely destroy our Constitutional Republic and American values. We need every patriot on the line. Stop depending on others to do it for
you. Think of Raquel Chavez.
