Rebuttal to Dave Long on the Georgia Flag, by J. A. Davis
Webmaster's Note: This commentary is in response to Dave Long's letter regarding the Georgia State Flag which is posted
below this commentary.
Dear Editor,
Usually when I read the opinion of people writing letters I try to find something fact worthy that I can agree
with. In the case of a letter by Dave Long of Gainesville, there is nothing factual.
Mr. Long poses as a conservative when he more likely is a neo-
conservative who takes self-satisfying liberties with the text and intent of the Constitution of the United States as developed
and articulated by The Framers.
If he were a "conservative," he would insist on applying the "best governed being
least governed" principle to the Georgia flag. Instead, he prefers NOT to allow
the people to speak on their choice of a flag, choosing instead to allow
a corrupt few (with money of course) to make a decision the people should make.
Quoting Mr. Long, "We have put a flag over the capitol that is exactly like first flag of
the Confederacy". Not so. The first flag of the Confederacy had seven stars, representing the original Confederate states.
The phony counterfeit flag [see below] Mr. Long attempts to advance as "exactly like" contains thirteen stars. The Georgia Code describing these thirteen stars explicitly
describes them as the Betsy Ross stars.
Mr. Long might fool some, but he doesn't fool the true Confederate
conservatives who do not recognize Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania and Delaware
as members of the Confederacy.
In fact, he insults descendants of the
Confederacy by trying to revise history in an attempt to be politically correct and in ascribing motives that simply are not there. No, Mr.
Long, Georgia is not exactly like Massachusetts and I hope it never will be.
Most conservatives I know agree. I suspect "those people" in Massachussets would disagree with Mr. Long, too.
Since the flag Mr. Long supports received
only 14.8% of the votes of Georgia's registered voters, with around 80%
refusing to vote without a fair choice, the
question begs as to why anyone who claims to be a conservative would
refuse to allow the people a fair vote with the 1956 flag included?
Real conservatives are not afraid of the people exercising their right
of self-determination.
This issue will NOT be resolved until the
people vote in a Fair Vote. People who claim to be conservative and thwart the will
of the people make it difficult for real conservatives to advance the cause of
liberty.

Conservatives also wish the flag issue would go away.
In reference to Calvin Johnson Jr.'s letter Monday, most conservatives (including myself) wish the
flag issue would go away. We have put a flag over the capitol that is exactly like first flag of the Confederacy, with state
emblem added. That is more than enough recognition of that period.
The Confederate battle flag we had previously was established for one reason only: to thumb our
noses at the federal government during the initial time of school integration. [ False! ]
What Mr. Johnson misses is that the Confederate battle flag has been adopted by extreme hate groups
such as the KKK and neo-Nazis. We may not like that, but it is a fact. I also don't appreciate that the word "gay" and the
rainbow have been adopted as a symbol of a group. But I no longer call my friends "gay" and I don't have a rainbow on the back
of my car.
When I see a Confederate battle flag hanging in front of a trailer, I know what it means and so
does Mr. Johnson. They are not honoring the war dead of Georgia. It pains me to see it, but we must give up this symbol to
those who have stolen and corrupted it.
Fly the first flag of the Confederacy instead if you wish, and the state flag. Most people would
not know the difference.
