Jeff Davis
Jeff Davis

Jeff Davis is a retired radio-TV journalist living in Gainesville, GA. Active in civic and political affairs, he is past president of the Georgia Jaycees, former vice president of the US and the world Jaycees, former campaign chairman of the Georgia Republican party. He voluntarily serves as chairman of the Georgia Heritage Council. He is a collateral descendant of President Jefferson Davis and a member of SCV Camp 1418 in Cleveland, GA.

Major Changes In Government Possible-- Commentary by J. A. Davis

"The principal for which we contend is bound to reassert itself, though it may be at another time and in another form." ---Jefferson Davis

"Though written constitutions may be violated in moments of passion or delusion, yet they furnish a text to which those who are watchful may again rally and recall the people. They fix, too, for the people the principles of their political creed." ---Thomas Jefferson

If you care at all how your life will be affected in the next two to four years, you might join me in reading the tea leaves of public opinion. (See recent Newsweek)

With just one month to go before the November elections, Americans are showing the most dramatic signs of unrest and pure lack of confidence I have seen in years.

Questions pertinent to the situation arise. Can the Republicans in Congress salvage control of a majority in the next four weeks, or, will it grow worse and become a huge Democratic takeover?

There is now some evidence the public disgust could also cost the GOP the majority of the Senate, thought to be safe only a few weeks ago.

New scandals may yet come, and it is likely some more resignations are in the offing. Desperation requires some sacrificial lambs. Panic begets internal finger pointing, leaks, attempts to separate one's self from former boon companions who are under fire.

Unless there is a major reversal this could be one of the biggest exercises of public indignation by "we the people" who have finally come to realize the only hope for liberty is a lawfully correct revolution at the polls.

Are the alternate choices any better? Probably not, but they are a change. More, they represent an opportunity for the citizenry to speak and feel they have tried to rectify the errors of their own ways in their previous support of those who have fooled them by appearing one way and voting a party line completely different.

This makes me sad. It's been making me sad when I came to realize the Republican party in Georgia that I spent a good part of my life birthing, nurturing and ushering to maturity, has so little regard for honesty, truth and integrity.

Aliens to the philosophy of our Fathers gradually began to infiltrate the ranks on both the state and national levels. Incrementally these people began to take control of the party of the local, state and national levels. Rather than applauding the swelling of the ranks, we should have questioned the integrity and morality of some of these people who sold out their past associations for new opportunities to hold positions of power. I find no greater current manifestation of greed and selfishness.

In more cases than not, they have turned out to be embarrassments. I could point out by name more than a dozen prominent Republicans in Georgia who have little respect for constitutional order. Heading the list is George (Sonny) Perdue who has probably violated more ethics with shady attempts at secret deals than several of the Democrat governors combined who influenced his vision of government and where he got his political experience. He and his companions have contaminated a balance of power with more of the same virus we thought we had eradicated when we believed them.

They and their fellow travellers have disgraced the good honest Georgians who voluntarily gave parts of their lives to develop a conservative oriented Republican party in Georgia.

These pseudo-Republican intruders need to be expelled along with their misguided neocon leadership in Washington.

Anyone who believes a party that has as its chairman the likes of Ken Mehlman who could be party to a scandal himself, is deluding themselves. He and Karl Rove and associates have led the party on a path of division, deception and devastation.

The chickens come home to roost. As more and more folks who have supported Republicans realize these people have little respect for the principles of our Founders, are out of the closet on their disrespect for the South, while depending on those very votes, (the red states) to continue to elect people who blindly follow their leadership in selling out America to a North American Union with no borders and the trashing of our state and national sovereignty.

As a Southerner and a Republican I want to be clear. I'm tired of the bashing these purveyors of hate and division constantly aim at real conservatives everywhere but particularly in the South. I just wonder how many fellow Southerners feel likewise?

It needs to be known. Southerners are still the last vestiage of a backbone for constitutional liberty in this country. Despite all the criticism to the contrary, when his nation gets in trouble as it is now, it is the Southerners who lead the patriotic Americans from all areas to a course of correction.

Let's get something straight. We native Southerners are Americans too. Our forefathers were instrumental in the founding of this nation. We responded when other sections didn't in defending and preserving the nation in 1812. We have furnished more troops to our military in every crisis by per capita percentage than any other area of the nation. We have provided talented people to lead in the growth and prosperity of these United States. With all of its faults (which are becoming fearsome) we are proud Americans of Southern lineage.

When detractors disparage us, usually for some contrived issues based on divisiveness and an absence of truthful history, we can honestly respond as President Davis did when he said:

"In asserting the right of secession, it has not been my wish to incite to its exercise: I recognize the fact that the war showed it to be impracticable, but it did not prove it to be wrong; and, now that it may not again be attempted, and that the Union may promote the general welfare, it is needful that the truth, the whole truth, should be known, so that crimination and recrimination may forever cease, and then, on the basis of fraternity and faithful regard for the rights of the states, there may be written on the arch of the union, 'Esto Perpetua.'" [The union forever]

Yes, the truth, the whole truth, should be known now more than ever.

I've often wondered if John Phillip Sousa was inspired by these words when he wrote "The Stars and Stripes Forever." As a Southerner I have no objection to that great march because we never wanted anything but the continuation of the union, even though our forefathers chose to separate from it.

When I hear it now, I'm proud "on the basis of fraternity" and that same fraternity should reciprocate by playing Dixie, and then we might be on the path to a reconciliation of a nation that has been torn at the seams for long too long.

As a matter of fact, Maestro Sousa tried to do exactly that at the Southern States Exposition in Atlanta in the period that followed the terrible era of Deconstruction.

The crimination and recrimination that President Davis spoke of must end, too, if "esto Pepetua" is to be. The first step might be to show the same respect he exemplified for all which must equally include Southerners and our heritage and symbols. Without that there is no "esto pepetua."

Hardly a one of us have not served, or had a close relative serve in the U. S. military. Many of us have served in the U. S. government in one form or another. When the chips get down, the Southerners are there. It looks like the time for a muster of real Southerners at the polls. Maybe that's why we're called Rebels. That spirit they will never take from us.

You consider the issues being polled for yourself and then make up your own mind. It is important that you protect your rights with this wonderful opportunity to express yourself as part of the "consent of the governed." We still have that, I think.
