GHC 2004 Election Scorecard, by J. A. Davis
The Georgia Heritage Coalition undertook a formidable task in
developing Voter Guides and Endorsements for 65 candidates in the just concluded
election.
Here's a brief summary of the results which are a compliment to Randy
Phillips, our Director for Governmental Affairs, and his committee. I can safely say that since I just reviewed the
results of the most expensive national advisory on the elections put out by Move On, the ultra left wing group
which spent millions of George Soros' money trying to influence the elections. They
scored an 18.5% success ratio on their endorsements.
Of the 65 candidates endorsed by GHC, 33 won and 32 lost. Call it 50%. Of course, the we don't pick our candidates based
solely on their likelihood to win.
Here are some highlights:
We added significant numbers to our potential Heritage Caucus list.
Far better than any years in recent memory.
Georgia voters who identified with us
got rid of some real enemies such as Ginger Collins, Randy Hall and
Faye Smith in the Senate. We lost a great champion in our Cause there as
well, Don Cheeks from Augusta.
Voters agreed with the wisdom of booting TurnCoats Pat Dooley and Wallace Scholar in the House.
Unfortunately, we lost real heritage supporter as Mike Snow lost a close
race.
We didn't take out all of the heritage-haters, but we made a good start
and we did well enough to put the skeer on a few survivors.
We were proud to see Georgia voters of the 8th district shared our support for Lynn
Westmoreland for Congress.
Our website has seen some significant traffic in the past several weeks.
Hopefully, we have provided a needed service for the electorate with our guides and endorsements and links to those of
other heritage groups.
Of course there is always some disagreement on endorsements, even in
a close-knit family. We recognize we can't please everyone. We also admit some endorsements are debatable. We do try to accept
comments, compliments and even criticism in a positive spirit. Feedback is always appreciated.
As Director Woody Highsmith says, "There just ain't no end to doing good", we keep trying, recognizing there are good
and well-intentioned partisans who may not be quite as non-partisan as we are and they will disagree with us accordingly.
You will be hearing more from Randy and his committee as we undertake
the next big chore. It is preparing for a legislative session with a totally turned over house and new leadership and
the task of dealing with a state capitol now in control of one party...governor, Senate and House. It will be a new
experience, for us and them. Anyone who wishes to join in our lobbying group of Jim Dean, Randy Phillips and Norman
Black, speak up. We don't pay, but we do promise you won't get bored.
With the carryovers who were not contested in the November election,
our group of legislative supporters for Southern Hertage should be a serious number. Our job now is to provide them with help,
assistance and stimulus toward accomplishing some worthwhile goals.
We're optimistic as we proceed across a non-partisan field that is surely
planted with land mines. Opportunities require risk.
