A Word to the Wise
Commentary by J. A. Davis, 3/18/2010
"Let each citizen remember at the moment he is offering his vote that he is not making a
present or a compliment to please an individual ... but that he is executing one of the
most solemn trusts in human society for which he is accountable to God and his country."
--Samuel Adams
The old adage, A word to the wise is sufficient" may be getting yet another test. History
tells us that some do heed wise words, while a larger majority do not.
Currently the are several key issues that will severely affect the lives of all Americans
where a word to the wise has been issued. Repeatedly.
If past history is any barometer, about one third will consider the warning as real and the
balance of those affected will either ignore it or leave it to someone else to worry about.
Is there any wonder we're in the mess we're in?
Recently
I wrote about the seriousness of the
warnings issued by Moody's,
the folks who rate
the value of bonded indebtedness, among other things. They historically issue warnings
before reducing the worthiness of government bonds. They have now issued a second warning
to the Obama administration that effectively says, either get your financial house in order
or you will lose the AAA (superior) rating. This means interest on the U. S. debt will
increase dramatically and take another big hunk out of what we used to think of as our
treasury. It will affect the price of everything we buy and sell whether individuals or as
a business or a country. It is the trigger that can burst the bubble that has
artificially held inflation in check and open the door to the worst form of taxation:
Double-digit inflation.
Instead of heeding the warning the Obama administration is focused almost entirely on
health care issues largely ignoring the most injurious aspect of our economy, jobs.
Despite all the happy talk about great progress in employment, the government's own numbers
show unemployment is getting worse, not better. Georgia just announced the unemployed in
the state is now 10.5%. That includes only those who are registered. It does not include
about the same number who are no longer seeking benefits or who are under employed in part
time jobs. The true number in Georgia is more like twenty percent (20%). [As a point of
reference, unemployment was at twenty-five percent during the Great Depression.]
Meanwhile, we now know in the first year of the Obama administration the debt increased TWO
TRILLION dollars. Since this spending was all authorized by the Obama administration,
blaming George Bush is running a little thin.
The one increase in employment has been in government workers adding more and more
liability to the taxpayers. Worse, instead of limited federal government, we're headed
for a much larger and more intrusive federal goverment.
That brings up another word to the wise. A recent study shows that government workers,
thanks to the new controlling factor in America, the labor unions, now average $70,000
salary per year as opposed to those in private business who average around $40,000. The
calculations are broken down so there is a comparison in comparable jobs and responsibilities.
To worsen the situation, the government employees have early retirement and luxurious
defined benefits in retirement that are several times more costly than private business
which tries to provide benefits without tax payer assistance.
If you've been watching the great transformation in our federal government, it has been underway
as we were told it would be. Fifty three percent (53%) of voters bought into this great new
Hope. Now, we all must suffer the results the unconscious incompetents have given
us.
Of course, if our governments were held obedient to the Constitution, then incompetent voters
could do less damage to the whole. The Framers tried to protect us from the "tyranny of the
majority" with checks and balances, with competing powers to check those holding power
within the limits defined for a given office or branch.
The voice of the people, the consent of the governed, has now been neutered or abolished.
It has transformed (perverted) into policies provided by the labor unions which have open access to the
White House. If you have any doubts simply check the special benefits set aside for labor
union members in virtually every piece of legislation introduced by the LABOR PARTY, the
appropriate name for what used to be the Democratic Party. Unfortunately, most Democrats
have no idea that they are now transformed in this way. Now we'll see whether they truly
want to be controlled by a labor party saddled in Marxist ideology, or whether at least
some will come out from under the ether and bolt the column following the Pied Piper of
Chicago.
"Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with
power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny."
--Thomas Jefferson
"All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent."
-- Thomas Jefferson
"Democracy is the road to socialism."
-- Karl Marx
"Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found
incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been
as short in their lives as they have been violent in their death."
-- James Madison, from Federalist #10
"A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take
away the rights of the other forty-nine." -- Thomas Jefferson
"Bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to
prevail, that will to be rightful must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal
rights, which equal law must protect, and to violate would be oppression."
--Thomas Jefferson, First Inaugural address, 1801
"Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a
well-armed lamb contesting the vote!" -- Benjamin Franklin

By Mark Tapcott, Washington Examiner, 3/10/10
Would House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her fellow House Democratic leaders try to cram the Senate version of Obamacare through the House without actually having a recorded vote on the bill?
Not only is the answer yes, they would, they have figured out a way to do it, according to National Journal's Congress Daily:
"House Rules Chairwoman Louise Slaughter is prepping to help usher the healthcare overhaul through the House and potentially avoid a direct vote on the Senate overhaul bill, the chairwoman said Tuesday.
"Slaughter is weighing preparing a rule that would consider the Senate bill passed once the House approves a corrections bill that would make changes to the Senate version.
"Slaughter has not taken the plan to Speaker Pelosi as Democrats await CBO scores on the corrections bill. 'Once the CBO gives us the score, we'll spring right on it,' she said."
Each bill that comes before the House for a vote on final passage must be given a rule that determines things like whether the minority would be able to offer amendments to it from the floor.
In the Slaughter Solution, the rule would declare that the House "deems" the Senate version of Obamacare to have been passed by the House. House members would still have to vote on whether to accept the rule, but they would then be able to say they only voted for a rule, not for the bill itself.
Would that rationale fly with the public? Is it logical? Of course not. But remember, these folks have persuaded themselves that a majority of the American people really want Obamacare. A blog post on House Minority Leader John Boehner's blog described the approach as a "twisted scheme."
How much fun will it be for Democrats representing congressional districts carried by John McCain in 2008 to be constantly reminded about the Cornhusker Kickback, the Louisiana Purchase, the Slaughter Solution, the death panels, $500 billion in cuts to Medicare, individual mandates, etc.
UPDATE: Turner on Nancy's new rules
Grace-Marie Turner of the Galen Institute offers
another insight into the
Democrats' desperate search for some way to pass a proposal that is clearly opposed by a majority of their constituents.
