NumbersUSA Newsletter
April 3, 2006
GOOD MORNING,
I hope this is the day that every one of you will
either be going to visit your Senators' (or Representative's) local office
...
... or will make a phone call with the same message to your
Senators' DC and local offices.
We want to know
what you find when you get to the offices.
Our staff is too overloaded with the Senate to handle phone calls
in our offices, so we need to hear from you by email. That's how we can
turn things around the fastest and share info with the most people. (
Please arrange to call somebody you know from the Senator's office
itself so that person can email us your information. If you get it to us
fast enough, we can immediately email it to everybody else in your state
so they can know what to expect when they get to the office.
When
you get back home, go to your Action Buffet corkboard and click on the
YOUR VISIT TO SENATOR'S OFFICE FEEDBACK note so you can answer some more
questions about your visit today.
A sample of emails we got
yesterday:
"I went to church
today and got 7 of us going at 10:00 on Monday morning to Drier's Office.
I think that this is a great idea." ----------Becky, Upland,
California
"Thank you for your helpful messages. I plan to visit
my Senators tomorrow and have spent the afternoon preparing for the trip.
I have prepared a paper with points I wish to make at the Senators
offices. I hope all of us make an impression." ----------Ruth Ells
IN RESPONSE TO AN ALERT I SENT TO JUST
PEOPLE WHO HAVE SIGNED UP AS VETERANS AND FAMILIES: "What a great idea - veterans show up in uniforms, etc. My
husband, a Korean War Veteran, passed away 5 months ago - I will bring his
HONORABLE DISCHARGE PAPERS - HIS WINGS AND HIS DOGTAGS - thank you so much
for thinking of this. My husband was a wonderful American Patriot - he was
so upset during his last years of what had happened to his wonderful
country - destroyed by the corrupt politicians." ----------Laila
Sullivan
To all of you, I say, "It's not too
late to make plans and just make it happen."
See previous Alerts
for all the details for visiting the local offices of the Senators (or
Representative if no Senator nearby):
www.NumbersUSA.com/actionalerts
"Senators Smith and Wyden can expect a visit
from me on Monday. I’ll be distributing their Immigration Report Cards in
full glorious color with a letter from me detailing my feelings on Illegal
Immigration." ----------Greg Dawson
ARE ALL SENATORS WORTH VISITING?
"Would it not be smart to REALLY concentrate
on the Senators who are siting on the fence? I just don't think my
senators--Cantwell and Murray-- (D. WA) really give a s--t. How about
making an extra effort to get the word out to residents of states whose
senators can be affected?" ----------Ron S., Vancouver, WA
Actually, part of the reason for the National
Mobilization tomorrow is to show as much outrage as is civil to the
offices of the Senators who have done the most to harm American workers
and their families.
You never know what the indirect effects of
such pressure might be.
We will never win this issue if the
virtual entirety of one political party (the Democrats) feels it can thumb
its nose at the voters on this issue with impunity.
You will see
at the bottom of this email that 2 of the best 5 Senators on our issue are
Democrats and that 4 of the worst 5 Senators are Republicans. Nonetheless,
as a whole, the Democratic Senators are a solid wall against almost any
boundaries on the free flow of foreign labor into this country.
We
have to do all we can to get the attention of as many Democratic Senators
as possible, in hopes that 10 of them will vote for the American worker
and the American environment when it comes to immigration.
Washington's Senators Cantwell and Murray both have earned an F in
their incredible drive for higher and higher immigration. Come on, you
Washington staters, are you going to let them get by with that without a
little political pain?
Even if you don't end up changing these
two, the disapproval that they get may be a strong enough example for some
other Democrat in another state to moderate his/her position.
You all were busy Sunday -- you sent more than
40,000 faxes through our website to Congress and the President, in just
one day! More than 36,000 faxes sent TODAY alone!!!!

1. Disagreement between Obama &
Allen on ABC-TV Sunday provides talking points for your office visits and
phone calls I use the two Senators'
comments as a way to point out several important talking points for you
today. My comments are in black.
Sen. Allen really surprised us at
how outstanding he was, and you can learn some arguments from him. Sen.
Obama continues to fail to live up to his billing as a new kind of
politician not in the pockets of special interests.
Deep Rifts in US Senate Over Immigration
By Michael Bowman Washington 02 April 2006

Speaking on ABC's This Week program, Illinois Democratic Senator
Barack Obama said he favors a three-step approach.
"Improving
border security, tightening employer sanctions [penalties for those who
hire illegal workers>. The second provision is providing a pathway to
citizenship. We have 11 to 12 million undocumented workers in the country.
We want to regularize their lives. The third component is a guest worker
program," said Obama.
Almost
nobody who claims a three-step plan has any teeth in the enforcement part.
If you talk to an office that is pushing amnesty (by some other name) and
also talking tough enforcement, ask for the specific details.
They
aren't serious unless they include at least these:
(1) mandatory
electronic workplace verification to ensure that illegal aliens cannot get
a job,
(2) eventual use of the verification system of a company's
entire workforce
(3) mandatory federal cooperation in picking up
illegal aliens that are detained by local law enforcement -- and federal
reimbursement of detention costs when they don't pick up the illegals
quickly
(4) full powers (but not necessarily a requirement) for
local law enforcement to choose to enforce immigration laws
(5)
combination of technological virtual fence, high-security fencing and
Border Patrol to prevent nearly all illegal border crossings
Also appearing on This Week, Republican George
Allen of Virginia said there must be no reward for breaking U.S. laws.
"There is a consensus in America that we need to secure our
borders," commented Allen. "If we have a reward of illegal behavior, all
we will get is more illegal behavior. There are many people who have come
into this country legally."
Great point. When talking to an office in which the Senator is
supporting "earned legalization," ask why that would not encourage
millions of other foreigners to come here illegally.
Backers of the citizenship path counter that
illegal aliens would have to pay fines and submit to background checks,
among other steps, in order to be considered for eventual citizenship.
Hahahahaha. Isn't that funny?
How many tens of millions of people in the world would gladly pay a fine,
submit to background checks and learn English if they could be given the
right to live and work permanently in this country?
You will hear
in many offices today that those criteria somehow make this amnesty not an
amnesty.
In fact, we hear from you that nearly all of the amnesty
supporters in the Senate all say they oppose an amnesty. That's what even
Sen. Kennedy's office says constantly, even as he pushes allowing 12-20
million illegal aliens to remain here forever.
Do not budge off
amnesty and explaining why. But also get those offices to admit that their
Senator would reward the illegal aliens with permanent residency and a
path to citizenship. Then ask why people in other countries would not see
that as a reward for breaking the law.
Senator Obama says it (legalization of illegal aliens) is
the only practical option available.
"The notion that somehow
these 12 million people are going to get on a bus and go back across the
border just is not realistic," he added.
This is the other side's main argument. Usually it is
expressed even more starkly by saying that there is no way we could or
would round up 12 million people in deport them.
The fact is that
no public official is proposing "rounding them up." Nor does anybody
suggest that any solution will result in 12 million people voluntarily
going back home over the next year.
Obama -- like most of the open
border supporters -- sets up a straw man argument. He deliberately
misrepresents the options, trying to create a sense of invevitability that
illegal immigration can never by substantially halted.
Here's a
question: If nothing can be done to make the present illegal aliens to go
home, how are the "tough" enforcement provisions in the amnesty bills
supposed protect us from future illegal immigration? Ask them if they are
just lying to us when they claim that the enforcement provisions will stop
future illegal immigration from coming in.
But Senator Allen disagrees (that it is unrealistic to try
to get illegal aliens to start voluntarily returning home), arguing that,
if labor laws prohibiting the employment of undocumented workers were
rigorously enforced, illegal aliens would return to their native lands on
their own.
"The main point is: enforce the law. Right now, it is
illegal to hire those who are illegally. And if there is a workable,
efficient, practical way of hiring legal workers in this country,
employers will do that. Then, those who are here illegally will see that
they cannot find work in this country, and they are going to have to
leave," he argued.
Can you
believe it? Sen. Allen was arguing the attrition plan.
Any office
that talks like Sen. Allen did deserves a huge vote of thanks from folks
like you. Especially in Republican offices, push the idea of backing Sen.
Allen's thoughtful approach.
2. Main requests to
make Speak from your heart today.
But try to make one or more of these central points:
- No amnesty or any other name that gives illegal aliens the right to
live and work in the U.S. indefinitely. That will just entice millions
more to come.
- No increases in importing permanent foreign workers. We already have
nearly 50 million foreign workers and dependents. The Judiciary bill
would offer permanent green cards to 30 million more the next decade,
while Sen. Frist's bill would allow 20 million. Many parts of this
country are already overcongested without tens of millions more foreign
workers. And ever-increasing high percentages of native-born Americans
without college education are being pushed out of the job market by
foreign workers.
- No addition of an open-ended mass guestworker program, or any
increase that doesn't have extremely tight protections for American
workers.
3. RECENT IMMIGRATION GRADES FOR
U.S. SENATE ('Recent' covers
actions in previous Congress and all but the last month in this
Congress.)
To get a good feel for
how you should approach your Senator's office today, see how she/he
ranks in this list.
If you are in a Democrat's office, talk
about other Democrats who are much better. If in a Republican's,
emphasize the good Republican records.
