A Confederate History Minute (26) – by Calvin E. Johnson, Jr.
Remembering A Proud Southerner--Lewis Grizzard
Today, we live during politically correct times when children are no longer taught about their heroic Southern Grandfathers and Mothers who valiantly served
the Confederate Cause called by some 'the 2nd American Revolution.'
During times like these that, I miss the late, great Lewis Gizzard who wrote and spoke with Southern-American pride.
In 1984, he wrote an article about nearly forgetting that April 26th is Confederate Memorial Day. He said he remembered as a young man hearing the
Universtiy of Georgia's Dixie Redcoat band play Dixie. He also loved to go to the Cyclorama at Grant Park in Atlanta to see and hear about the program
of the War Between the States Battle of Atlanta. He always remembered Confederate Memorial Day.
Mr. Grizzard became famous due to his uncanny Southern wit-humor and knowing how to tell a good story. He did not seek to fight old battles but only to
remember the men and women who fought for Dixie during 1861-1865.
Grizzard spoke on many subjects but you knew he was a Dixie boy due to his strong Southern accent.
I know Lewis is in Heaven talking to George Washington, Robert E. Lee and Douglas Macarthur. He is in good company.
God Bless the memory of a Southern Man--Lewis Grizzard.
