Our Contract with the Dead and the Yet Unborn – Commentary by Michael Kilpatrick, 3/07/10
"Society is indeed a contract . . . it becomes a partnership not only between those who are living, but between those who are living, those who are dead,
and those who are to be born." --Edmund Burke, [Irish-English statesman and member of Parliament during the American Revolution], from An Appeal
From the New to the Old Whigs, in Ritchie, ed., Further Reflections on the Revolution in France, pp. 193.
History isn't really made anew each morning. As Ms. Coulter notes, 'progressives' only wish that it could be. Like it or not, the men who set the course for
this nation had something specific in mind. The fruit of that vision produced the greatest liberty, for the most people, this world has known. But
there are those who, by virtue of their own egos, know much better how men should be ruled... by an elitist Oligarchy, designated by themselves.
We have a certain obligation to those who came before us, and to those who will follow after us, not to simply sit by in feigned helplessness while
liberty is stolen. Do whatever you can, whenever you can, as often as you can. The ballot box hasn't served us all that well for some time now.
It may well become useless, and then extinct. If you are a Christian who believes that you are to wait complacently at the Heaven Line bus stop
for a meek and mild bearded woman to come by with wings and a harp for you, depart from us.
Appomattox was just one step along the way to tyranny's relentless lust for power. We have reached the culmination of years of insurgency.
The invaders nearly have us firmly within the iron fist of slavery to the State. Awake!
---Dirt Road Scholar
"These men are not an army, they are citizens defending their country."
---Robert E. Lee

Constitutionalist.
"The liberties of our Country, the freedom of our civil constitution are worth defending at all hazards: And it is our duty to defend them against all attacks.
We have receiv'd them as a fair Inheritance from our worthy Ancestors: They purchas'd them for us with toil and danger and expence of treasure and blood; and
transmitted them to us with care and diligence. It will bring an everlasting mark of infamy on the present generation, enlightened as it is, if we should
suffer them to be wrested from us by violence without a struggle; or be cheated out of them by the artifices of false and designing men. ... Let
us remember that 'if we suffer tamely a lawless attack upon our liberty, we encourage it, and involve others in our doom.' It is a very serious
consideration, which should deeply impress our minds, that millions yet unborn may be the miserable sharers of the event."
---Samuel Adams (From The Rights of the Colonists, page 419) [Bold emphasis is ours]
"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or
arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were
our countrymen!"
---Samuel Adams
