Why the Name Change? – Commentary by Steve Scroggins
When GHC became active just over a year ago, we eventually planned to incorporate
for the obvious advantages when the need arose. But as a small but growing group of volunteers, we kept putting it off in favor of one hot project or another.
When the GHC Steering Committee agreed for GHC to become a plaintiff in the Augusta Riverwalk flag
removal case, we knew that incorporation was needed and pronto.
That's when we discovered the problem.
It seems that someone had already reserved and "parked" the corporate name Georgia Heritage Coalition (technically, Georgia Heritage
Coalition, Inc.) we'd been operating under and they did so back in 1999 or 2000, well before we became active.
The people who had already formed a corporation with the name were not using it; the corporation was not operational or active.
Nevertheless, they were not interested in selling the name to us at their cost (legal, filing fees, etc.).
So, we needed a new name under which to incorporate as a legal Georgia corporation. For better or for worse, we chose the name "Georgia
Heritage Council."
So now we're Council instead of Coalition.
Same people, same goals. No mysterious intrigue or in-fighting. We're just changing the
website to conform to our legal corporate name, a legal requirement to carry out our mission to defend and restore Georgia heritage by entering legal
battles in Augusta and elsewhere in the future.
Our website will continue to operate under both domain names, but we'll eventually phase out all the
Coalition stuff.
Until then, all the old links will still work whether pointed to the Coalition domain or the Council domain.
We ask all of our Internet link partners to change any links to our default page to the 'Council' domain at their earliest convenience. That is,
change from www.GeorgiaHeritageCouncil.org to www.GeorgiaHeritageCouncil.org.
For links to specific pages, for example, this page, simply place the text "coalition" in the URL with "council"....but as stated above,
either one will work and both will open pages that appear identical. The following links will BOTH open the X-Files page:
www.GeorgiaHeritageCouncil.org/site2/x-files.phtml
www.GeorgiaHeritageCouncil.org/site2/x-files.phtml.
The only visible difference will be the URL that displays in your address bar. At some undetermined
and probably unannounced point in the future, the 'Coalition' URLs will stop working. We are hopeful that the transition will be a smooth
one and seek the help of partner webmasters to update links to our content.
Informing the public is a part of our mission. Knowledge is power and we cannot perform our duty as citizens and as guardians
of our heritage without it. GHC will continue to provide similar content as we have in the past and hope to add more in the form of multi-media
offerings and more original commentary in the near future. We welcome your comments and suggestions and we appreciate your efforts to help by
spreading the message.
