It's interesting to note that it was import/export tariffs (1828, 1832) that led the country to the brink of war
in 1832 (South Carolina nullified the Tarriff
of Abominations and the Tariff of 1832.). The disproportionate burden these protectionist tariffs placed on the Southern farmer was a source of conflict for decades. It's estimated
that prior to the War to prevent Southern Independence, the Southern States were paying 72 to 74% of all federal tax revenues. We can credit
Lincoln for creating the first Commissioner of Internal Revenue in 1862...he needed $1.7 million a day to carry out his conquest of the South.
The United States Congress imposed an income tax temporarily to fund war debts on several occasions (1812-1816, 1861-1870) but by
and large, the American resistance to tyranny was rapidly breaking down following Lincoln's war to prevent secession. According to Adam Young writing for the Mises Institute,
there were 68 proposals from Congress to impose an income tax between 1874 and 1894. The income tax passed in 1893 was ruled unconstitutional. It was the 16th
Amendment ratified in 1913 that authorized a permanent income tax. Young writes...

Richard E. Byrd, speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, predicted, "a hand from Washington will be stretched out and placed upon every
man's business. . . . Heavy fines imposed by distant and unfamiliar tribunals will constantly menace the taxpayer. An army of Federal officials,
spies and detectives will descend upon the state...." [14] Pandora had opened the box.
Young's essay opens with a bang that really hooked me. Read this intro and see if you want to read the whole

"The freedoms won by Americans in 1776 were lost in the revolution of 1913," wrote
Frank Chodorov. Indeed, a man's home used
to be his castle. The income tax, however, gave the government the keys to every door and the sole right to change the locks.
Today the American people are no longer the master and the government has ceased to be the servant. How could this be? The Revolution fought
in the name of the inherent natural rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness promised to enthrone the gains of individualism.
Instead, federal taxation bribes the States and individuals to serve the interests of ever-greater submission to the centralized will.

The expression tax slavery certainly isn't new. Syndicated columnist Paul Craig Roberts has been writing
columns on the tax serfdom and slavery themes for years (See the links to the Roberts' columns below) but well before him, the Founders viewed
excessive taxation as a form of slavery, too.
I'll close this with quotes from Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams and Patrick Henry. When you read these quotes
below, ask yourself this question: Do Americans today have the guts to do what the Founders did? That is, to defy an empire and declare ourselves FREE
of government tax slavery?
"What more is necessary to make us a happy and a prosperous people? Still one thing more, fellow citizens--a wise
and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, but shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of
industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and
this is necessary to close the circle of our felicities. If we can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the
pretense of taking care of them, they must become happy...." -----Thomas Jefferson (from his 2nd Inaugural Address) {Bold emphasis mine}

an AJC article questioning Perdue's
